Recently, the influence of josh to got me to watch the movie: “what the bleep do we know?” In typical fashion, it has now become a point of fascination and rumination…raising questions and ideas that, when brought into play with my inability to articulate or organize any semblance of coherent thought on such matters, has caused my friends to drop off like flies:

“hey megan. How was your day?”

My apologies to anyone who has been alienated by my tomfoolerie(sp?). But this work that Dr. Masaru Emoto does with water is amazing. the website probably does a better job of describing what he is up to:

“Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them. He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors.”

last night the ab and i tapped summerfest '05. abbey bought me a beer from a local brewery called eastside. i promptly dropped it on the ground, perhaps in a wild effort to impress abbey's friends that i had just met. this morning ab decided to "show me around the neighborhood"...which turned out to be a thinly veiled scheme to showcase her skilz on her k2 rollerblades. she wanted me to mention that she is a really talented and cute blader.

after a night of fun dancing the dj invited me back to be the "guest-host-dj." i don't know how impressed he was with my set...there was no request for more. we danced until late, mixing it up with the waitresses and the local kids. it was one of my favorite nights in china.

we flew from pingyao to wuhan, the birth place for jun, one of our leaders. this is a phot of her niece yi, one of the cutest little girls ever. we ate dinner at her parents home, the same one she grew up in. jun knew some of us love cheese and she made sure plenty was present.

after a few lovely days at wutaishan we took a coach to the ancient walled city of pingyao. it is now a modern city with the walled section making up 1/4 of the population. we got to stay in the walled sector in a hotel that was once one of the large courtyard style homes from pingyao's glory days as the banking headquaters of the east. the bathroom at our hotel was very literal, with the entire room serving as the shower. the toilet an the sink just stuck out of the shower wall. cool.

our visit to the five buddhist peaks of wutaishan was one of the most beautiful parts of this trip. the smog that i hadn't really noticed while in beijing was suddenly gone, replaced by sunny skies and breathtaking mountains. the general feel of the place so positive and natural it was hard to believe that only a few decades ago all the monks were driven out of the area and the temples closed for ten years. i wish i could share the sound of the singing and the smell of the incense.

our last day in beijing was the only day of rain, which then turned into an exciting hail storm. i went outside under a sketch overhang to take some photos and was stuck there for about 30 minutes of hail with a man i didn't know.

hello. i haven't been able to post photos in awhile. to even post to my blog i have to go through flickr because china doesn't approve of blogspot. i'm on a hotel computer so i can't upload anything yet...hopefully i'll get that taken care of. meanwhile, this picture of josh should be a treat. we are now in wuhan, the home of jun fu, a leader on our trip. we had a wonderful dinner at her parents home. hopefully i will be able to share some photos tomorrow of what i have been up to for the past few days. goodnight.

the beijing pollution came out in full force for our visit to tiananmen gate yesterday. it was strange to see a place i associate so much with the riots of 1989 filled with so many tourists from all over china. unlike the jaded beijing locals who are used to foreigners, the crowd a tiananmen seemed impressed with my tall caucasian look…i had to pose for many photographs. oh, mao.

yesterday we drove three hours away to a more remote area of the great wall less frequented by tourists. it is something that is hard to be prepared for. the history of the place, the beautiful mountains and perfect weather made the hike along the wall easy to enjoy. along the way I met a woman named Zhang Shuxiang and many of her friends. they used to be farmers in the area, but because of topsoil erosion and environmental concerns the government does not allow them to farm their land. since they are unable to farm the government granted them special permission to solicit on the walk along the great wall. they wait in a line with numbers at a point early along the path and for every foreigner that passes they are allowed to walk up with them and assist them along the way. they are not allowed to sell anything until on the way back, and then they can only sell this one bad book (which i now own) and a certain great wall t-shirt. (which i also own.) they made the walk up the wall wonderful and even helped me with my Chinese speaking skills. Zhang Shuxiang was especially impressed by my polaroid camera. i took a cartridge of polaroid portraits of these lovely ladies and each one caused a huge stir. some of the walk up the wall two of three times a day with tourists in an effort to sell one horrible book. it was a world far away from the luxury and skyscrapers of Beijing.

yesterday we went to the american embassy in beijing and met with some diplomats, which i was into. the embassy cafeteria was excellent. the afternoon was spent shopping and then we went to a uyghur restaurant for dinner and celebration. we still had time to take this group shot.

Gijs Bakker's definition of a well-designed product:

“It's when you take great care about the content. A product is interesting when it has a story; when it has layers of meaning. It can be social or political or about the environment or whatever, but if there are layers of meaning, and nicely hidden, then it has a nice balance. It shouldn't shout about it.

“If the consumer is unaware of the story, it's okay. I compare it with music. I'm a lover of music, so intuitively I feel a quality in a performance or a certain composition.
